MN HOSA MRC Starts Year in NE MN with Disaster Camp

A hands on camp for:
An eye opening ADVENTURE for youth impacted by the 2012 NE MN Floods. Hands-on discoveries for recovery and preparedness as the result in disaster areas affected. An opportunity to Duluth and surrounding area youth to learn about weather, disasters and how to help others and themselves prepare for a disaster at home or in their community.
Objective: Reach out to youth to help them understand and learn what a disaster is, how to prepare, how to recover and help others. Learn about communitiy agencies that prepare and how they respond.
Goal: Partcipants will learn to prepare and use their knowledge at home and their community to know how to respond to a disaster before it happens.
With sponsorship of the MN Department of Health- Office of Emergency Preparedness and partners from the Mahtowa Fire Department, Carlton County Emergency Management and Public Health and Moos Lake Ambulance, and St. Lukes Hospital in Duluth MN, HOSA MRC held an Awesome Disaster Camp on August 27th for 35 area participants teaching Disaster Kits assembly, Psychological First Aid and discussing weather and the effects of the 2012 floods, CPR and First Aid, teambuilding and understanding other Emergency Response Careers. It was a learning and teaching activity for the participants as well as the HOSA students that taught it.
This is the first of many with all HOSA chapters having the ability to do the same in there communities. There are already plans for another Duluth area Camp in June, 2014.
